Iowa 2020 Tornado Stats

The 2020 tornado season kicked off on March 28th, with nine tornadoes across central and eastern Iowa. Compared to previous years, the 2020 Iowa tornado season was fairly inactive.

Most of the tornadoes occurred during the months of March and May, but there were a few in August which occurred during the derecho. Below is a chart that is broken out by month for the number of tornadoes that occurred each month.

As for the time of day when the tornadoes occurred, the majority of the tornadoes occurred from late morning through mid-afternoon, compared to the average of late afternoon to early evening.

As for the strength of the tornadoes, all of them were very weak. There were 6 EF-0 tornadoes, 9 EF-1 tornadoes, and 13 EF-Unknown tornadoes. An EF-Unknown tornado cannot be rated due to a lack of damage evidence.

The average path length of these tornadoes was 2.5 miles with an average width of 56 yards. The longest tornado path was 7.47miles which occurred in Adams and Adair Counties. The largest tornado width was 250yards, which occurred in Wright County south of Eagle Grove, Iowa. Fortunately, out of all 28 tornadoes that occurred in 2020, not one tornado caused any injuries or deaths.
