
The state of Iowa is bracing for a dangerously cold night as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect from 9 PM this evening, February 17, through noon Tuesday, February 18, 2025. An earlier Cold Weather Advisory is in place until 9 PM before the deeper cold settles in.
What to Expect
- Wind Chills: Expect dangerously cold wind chills ranging from -30°F to -42°F across much of Iowa.
- Frostbite Risk: Exposure to these conditions could result in frostbite in as little as 10 minutes.
- Extended Cold Period: Additional cold weather warnings and advisories are likely to continue through the week.
Areas Affected
- North-Central Iowa: Including Mason City, Algona, Estherville, and surrounding areas. Wind chills could drop as low as -41°F.
- Central Iowa: Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, and surrounding counties are under an Extreme Cold Warning, with wind chills ranging from -30°F to -37°F.
- Eastern Iowa: Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Dubuque, and surrounding counties will also experience wind chills as low as -35°F.
- Western and Southwestern Iowa: Omaha-Council Bluffs area, Atlantic, and Winterset can expect temperatures falling to -33°F to -36°F.
Safety Precautions
- Limit Time Outdoors – If you must be outside, wear multiple layers, including insulated gloves, hats, and face coverings.
- Check on Vulnerable Individuals – The elderly, children, and those without adequate heating are especially at risk.
- Prepare Your Home and Vehicle – Ensure you have emergency supplies, including blankets, flashlights, and extra food.
- Pets & Livestock – Bring pets indoors and provide extra shelter for livestock.
