Blizzard and High Wind Warnings Issued for Iowa: Dangerous Travel Conditions Expected

Iowa is bracing for a powerful early spring storm set to bring blizzard conditions, high winds, and hazardous travel across much of the state. The National Weather Service has issued Blizzard Warnings and High Wind Warnings for multiple counties, with impacts expected to begin tonight and last through Wednesday afternoon.
Blizzard Conditions Expected
A strong system moving through the region will bring rain transitioning to snow overnight, quickly creating dangerous conditions. With wind gusts reaching up to 65 mph, visibility will be severely reduced, and whiteout conditions are likely, especially in open, rural areas. Snow accumulations will vary by location, with northern Iowa expected to receive 3 to 6 inches, while central and southern Iowa could see 1 to 4 inches. Even after snowfall ends, blowing and drifting snow will continue to cause hazardous conditions.

Timing and Affected Areas
The Blizzard Warning goes into effect tonight and will remain active through Wednesday afternoon. Some of the hardest-hit areas include:
- North Central & Central Iowa: Total snow accumulations between 3-6 inches, with some higher amounts near the Minnesota border.
- Southwest Iowa and Southeast Nebraska: Snow accumulations of 1-3 inches, with potential flash freezing and dangerous road conditions.
High Wind Warnings in Effect
For areas not covered by the Blizzard Warning, a High Wind Warning is in place. Winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are expected to cause widespread power outages, downed trees, and travel disruptions. High-profile vehicles will be especially at risk, and driving will be hazardous across the state.
Travel and Safety Precautions
With visibility dropping below a quarter mile at times and roads becoming snow-covered and icy, travel will be extremely dangerous in many areas. Those who must travel should:
- Check road conditions before departing and delay travel if possible.
- Have an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, food, water, and a flashlight.
- Avoid rural roads where whiteout conditions will be most severe.
- Prepare for power outages, as strong winds could cause widespread disruptions.
When Will Conditions Improve?
Blizzard conditions will gradually improve Wednesday afternoon as winds start to weaken. However, blowing snow and reduced visibility may persist in some areas into the evening hours.
