Tornadoes Touch Down Again in Iowa, Less Than Two Weeks Apart
Iowa finds itself grappling with the aftermath of yet another bout of tornadoes, striking just shy of two weeks since the last rampage of nature’s fury. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines and Omaha have been diligently surveying the damage left behind by a line of severe weather that swept through the state overnight on Monday, May 6th.
The National Weather Service in Omaha has confirmed four tornadoes occurred in their forecast area, three of them occurring in Iowa. The first tornado, an EF-1, occurred near Glenwood, Iowa from 8:48PM to 8:55PM. With peak winds of 110 mile per hour, this tornado carved a path spanning approximately 5.66 miles, with a maximum width of 250 yards.
The second tornado, an EF-1, occurred near Carson, Iowa. This tornado from 9:07PM to 9:09PM and had peak winds of 93 miles per hour. This tornado had a path length of 1.53 miles, and a max width of 200 yards.
The third and final tornado to occur in their forecast region was an EF-1 tornado near Minden, Iowa. This tornado occurred about 1 mile east of the April 26th EF-3 tornado. This tornado had peak winds of 107 miles per hour, with a path length of 4.05 miles, and a max width of 450 yards.
The NWS in Des Moines has confirmed the occurrence of five tornadoes. The first, categorized as an EF-1 tornado, made its presence known in Clarke County, just south of Osceola, Iowa, at a harrowing 12:38 AM, continuing until 12:46 AM. With peak winds ranging between 95 to 100 miles per hour, this tornado carved a path spanning approximately 6.23 miles, with a maximum width of 80 yards.
The second tornado occurred from 12:53AM to 12:55AM in Woodburn, Iowa in Clarke County Iowa. This EF-0 tornado had peak winds of 75 to 80 miles per hour, and had a path length of 2.02 miles with a max width of 80 yards.
The third tornado occurred in Warren County in Ackworth, Iowa. This tornado occurred from 1:11 AM to 1:16AM and was rated an EF-0. It had peak winds of 75 to 80 miles per hour, with a path length of 2.86 miles, and a max width of 80 yards.
Meanwhile, a fourth tornado occurred in Jasper County. The community of Prairie City bore witness to an EF-0 tornado. Touching down at 1:35 AM, this tornado tore through the landscape for a mere minute, measuring 0.14 miles in length, with a maximum width of 30 yards.
The final tornado was an EF-0 as well, that occurred from 1:37AM to 1:42AM in Marion County, near Knoxville, Iowa. This tornado has peak winds of 80 to 85 miles per hour, with a path length of 4.72 miles and a max width of 80 yards.
