Iowa Faces Potential Severe Weather Threat on Independence Day

0
4th of July Severe Weather Threat

As Independence Day approaches, those in Iowa with outdoor festivities should be alert to the risk of severe weather Tuesday late in the day. The latest forecast indicates the potential for severe storms, including damaging winds and large hail. As Iowans gear up to commemorate this special day, it’s crucial to stay informed and prepared for the possibility of severe weather conditions that may impact outdoor activities.

Iowa Temperature Outlook:

On Tuesday, we can anticipate slightly warmer temperatures compared to those of Monday. Highs are expected to reach the lower to mid-90s. The heat index values, which take into account both the temperature and humidity, could make it feel like the mid to upper 90s, especially along and south of I80. It’s going to be another hot day, so stay prepared and take necessary precautions to beat the heat.

Iowa Forecast Temperatures for Wednesday

Severe Storm Potential:

During Tuesday afternoon, a shortwave is projected to move from the northern Rockies into the Plains. This will bring a cold front that will approach northwest Iowa by Tuesday evening. As the shortwave approaches, the cap, which is a layer of warm air aloft, will erode, allowing for the development of convection (thunderstorms) near the boundary. Some of these storms could become severe, mainly with damaging winds. The atmospheric conditions will also support the possibility of large hail. However, the overall intensity of the convection is expected to weaken as the night progresses into Wednesday morning.

As the cold front continues to move east, the severe weather threat will then shift to the eastern half of the state Wednesday. At this point, the threat on Wednesday is a little less certain, so stay tuned for more details on this threat in the coming days.

Rainfall Outlook:

With the showers and thunderstorms expected, there’s also the possibility of locally heavy rainfall. Model blends currently suggest around 1-2 inches of rain through daybreak Wednesday, particularly north of I80. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has placed parts of the state of Iowa in a slight risk of excessive heavy rainfall.
