January Tornadoes in Iowa? Marginal Risk Issued

Marginal risk of severe weather in eastern Iowa in January

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a marginal risk of a few strong storms Monday afternoon across portions of east-central to southeast Iowa. This is because a few storms could produce a couple brief tornadoes and marginally severe hail.

This threat will be conditional, but still warrants watching. It is not very often that tornadoes occur in Iowa in January. In fact, it has only occurred once in recorded Iowa weather history. This happened on January 24, 1967 when 13 tornadoes occurred over the southeast portion of the state.

Stay ahead of the latest severe weather by downloading the ISCN Weather app from the Android and Apple app stores. Our app will alert you to any tornado warnings or watches issued for your current location.
